Friday/Saturday - part 2
Saturday - Heathrow London
We had an enjoyable visit to Philly - it's a lovely city with so much history. We did the Hop On Hop Off bus but as it was rainy, we didn't hop off. Had a good guide and made lots of really bad pics thru rains spotted windows. Of course that won't stop me from sharing them with you! We got bhack thru security and then had an adult beverage - I know, surprise -and people watched. Two young men on their way to a friend's bachelor party in Columbia South America were pouring down sake (Japanese strong wine) and chasing it with Japanese beer. We don't know if they made their flight or not!
We've made it to the UK! We knew going in that we had a long layover here so we were prepared but we're ready to get on with the fun! The long of the flight went fairly well - and we were surrounded by lots of very nice people. It was, however, the screaming baby flight - - - all the way. But, there was a lovely young woman across the aisle from Beverly who was traveling with her 4 yr old daughter and 3 MONTH old son. Bev kept holding the baby for the Mom when she needed to eat and see to the little girl. Bev looked like she had found her UK souvenir!
Off the plane in Heathrow London and the "fun" continues. The Heathrow to Glasgow is delayed. They aren't even posting a gate or departure time. Wow! I've done a little traveling but man, this one is in the top 3 of problem solving trips. But, we leave only about 30 minutes later than scheduled. It was pretty crazy!
We landed and ordered up our Uber. After the long, adventuresome trip, we wanted simple door to door service so after about an hour ride we walked into our little Airbnb in a terrific location in Old Town. Two bed/two bath with a rather "unique" layout. I'll post pics later in the week of it.
We debated taking showers and changing clothes since we were feeling pretty grubby but hunger and exploring won out over all. A trip to a nearby little grocery then FOOD! The Grassmarket area just about 5 minutes from us is loaded with pubs and restaurants - - - and PEOPLE. The weather is beautiful and everyone was out taking advantage of it all so everything was packed! We got thrown out of the first pub we went to. OK, so not really thrown out but we were asked to leave when they found out we didn't have a "booking" (reservation) but recommended a place 2 doors down. It was so nice and we sat outside. Bev a mac & cheese with sharp English cheese. She said it was the best she'd ever had (I tasted it and have to agree) I had salmon cakes - so good. We were serenaded by a street musician. Oh my. Each song was - - painful. But he was enthusiastic and gave equal attention to Dolly, Beatles, Rod Stewart - it just took awhile to identify the songs.
Back to the apartment and showered - whew! We debated just burning our grubby clothes but we have a washer here so we'll just do a wash! We opened our balcony window, watched the Castle light up, shared a beer, and then called it a day.
Tomorrow - Castle Tour!
